Handkerchief

I always like to carry my handkerchief whenever I go out. But, I'm not sure if people at my age would like to use handkerchiefs, or they think it's weird to carry a handkerchief while going out.

Actually, I seldom see young people using a handkerchief in Taiwan. If somebody asks me why I like to use handkerchiefs, I would reply that I don't know. It's just one of my habits. Since I was a little boy, whenever I wanted to go out, my mom always said "Come and get you handkerchief, Simon." Therefore, now I'm used to carry my handkerchief when I want to go out. It's very useful and convenient. When I sweat, I can use it to wipe the sweat away. When I finish my meal, I can use it as a napkin to wipe my mouth. Even when I get hurt and my wound starts bleeding, I may use it to suppress the blood. These cases may happen, or may not. It's hard to say. After all, carrying a handkerchief is not difficult for me.

Some people, though, think it is strange or even sissy for males at my age to use handkerchiefs. But, I definitely don't think so. It's my habit, and I don't care anybody say about that since my mom taught me it's good to have this kind of habits, then it's good. And I love it!

So what do people your age in Taiwan carry instead of a handkerchief, little packets of tissues? I carry both. Why do you think they would consider carrying a handkerchief weird?

Most Americans blow their nose into a pocket handkerchief. It's also used as a male accessory in the breast pocket of some kind of fancy suit. It's been about 40 years since I wore one of those, however. I never wear suits anymore.

American women used to carry a handkerchief so that they could drop it in front of a young man they thought looked handsome. He'd see the dropped handkerchief, bend over to pick it up, and then return it to the woman. That way, she'd get to meet him without having to ask him to come over to see her. Sneaky, huh?

But you carry one because you've been doing it since you were a child. It's just a habit. You say you have no reasons for carrying one other than habit, but you give a few. I don't think I wipe my sweaty brow or mouth with one of my handkerchiefs or stanch the blood flow from a wound on my body, though, unless I hadn't used it to blow my nose yet.

American men often call a handkerchief a "snot rag".

It's not strange or sissy for American men to carry a handkerchief. My father used to think that it was pretty sissy for American boys and men to carry tissues with them, though.

"It doesn't bother me to bring a handkerchief with me."

I think bring a handkerchief is not strange because my father brings it all the time. It's personal habit and I think it's a good manner.
